This collection was not made simply to place a historical figure on clothing. It was made to ask where we come from, what we carry forward, and why knowing our history still matters.

Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica and went on to lead a movement built on Black self-reliance, organisation, entrepreneurship and connection among people of African descent around the world.

ROOTED IN JAMAICA

BEFORE THE MOVEMENT REACHED THE WORLD

Marcus Garvey was born in Jamaica in 1887, in the parish of St. Ann, and came of age in Kingston, where he trained as a printer and first organised workers around fair pay and dignity. What he saw at home a Black majority held back by colonial rule became the question his life would answer.

Those Jamaican roots did not stay local. Carried outward by Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association he founded, the idea of Black self-reliance, enterprise and shared identity took hold across the United States, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe, where divisions and chapters formed in cities far from where the movement began.

Before the movement reached the world, it had roots.

A MESSAGE THAT TRAVELED

FROM ONE ISLAND TO THE WORLD

What began as a Jamaican movement did not stay on one island. Garvey's writing and organizing traveled by ship, by post and by word of mouth, and Black communities in port cities and industrial towns took up the work on their own terms.

By the early 1920s the UNIA had grown into an international body, with divisions and chapters across the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe. Each one raised its own funds, held its own meetings and reported back to a shared headquarters — a movement held together by correspondence and conviction.
